London 10 Hour Piece Evaluation

When we got back from London, I was set the task of producing a final response for a small London and Paris art show (definitely not just a Paris one)...

My work needed to be inspired by the artists that I saw on my trip to London. When I was in the Frieze Art Fair I saw a number of pieces of work which featured neon lights, either on their own or wrapped around another piece of work. As well as this, I saw a number of beautifully designed and crafted automobiles. Throughout the day an idea began to formulate inside my mind about combining the two. This would begin to replicate the ideology of wind tunnels; expressing the sleekness and artistic values that cars hold. Whilst walking round, I started to see a diverse range of cars from all eras... In the designing/making stages, I had this thought in the back of mind, and I decided to make my piece an evolution of the car body, shown via the outline of the body. My piece aimed to show how when cars were deigned 'back in the day' the designers had much more freedom and little knowledge about wind tunnels and technology, being able to aerodynamically design a car to cut through the wind reducing drag. I also aimed to show how cars have become a much more rounded shape and how you get the one off cars which have pushed the deign boundaries and could be considered (by some) to be a piece of art themselves. To further show this, I decide that the cars I would present would have to be extremely rare 'uncommon' - something which design isn't commercial.
To present my work, I chose to create multicolored light drawings of each car. The multicolors adds to the dynamics of the page as it separates each section making them differ. Furthermore, to make the page appear less plain, I added some small subtle pieces of text to the image. I incorporated the dates of each car next to it and then in the middle of the page placed the title running along it. I felt like these small additions really changed the piece making it more informative and less dull as such.
If I could recreate this piece, I would wish to physically draw around the cars with different colored lights. This would make the piece much more personal, however, it could stray from the perfectness and detail that is ported through the car.
